As digital agency, CuCo love keeping up with trends on content management systems (CMS) for websites.

Our digital team are very proud that CMS of choice, WordPress, takes the top place in popularity. WordPress is used by 39.3% of all the websites, or 63.9 percent of site driven by an off-the-shelf CMS system.
How are the top 5 – after WordPress doing?
As you can see the online systems (Shopify, Wix, Squarespace & Blogger) take up 4 of the 10 spots – with part of the WordPress share also being made up of users of WordPress.com which is WordPresses own online system (WordPress doesn’t publish numbers comparing WordPress.com and WordPress.org) which shows that there are many people out there that just do not want the complexity of self-hosting their own sites.
eCommerce on the rise
As a result of COVID-19, more people have been buying and selling things online and as a result, eCommerce is taking up a quickly growing portion of the top sites. You can see in the graph above that Shopify is the one that has seen steady growth over the last two years. Alongside WordPress’s eCommerce platflorm, WooCommerce, it and Shopify have risen quite hard, although Shopify is growing faster than Woo. Compared to these OpenCart has seen a slight uptick, PrestaShop is still dropping down the ranks whilst BigCommerce and Magento’s have stayed static. So not all eCommmerce platforms have benefited.
Let’s put the most used CMS products aside for a moment. Whilst a 39.3% of the internet may be powered by WordPress, 44% of it actually relies on bespoke content management systems. So why bother with a custom CMS when there are plenty of available solutions ready to plug-and-play? One reasons may be that most content management solutions have vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit, a bespoke content systems solve that problem and deliver extra security. But of course this comes with a heavy price tag.
